With bands of decorative patterning built up through  layers of different media and techniques, Philip Taaffe’s  large-scale abstract painting references art-historical  motifs and design through the artist’s personal experiences.

The uniquely shaped supports for Beverly Fishman’s paintings are based on the shapes of pharmaceutical pills. The meticulous finishes are seductive, evoking the  aesthetic and branding strategies of drug manufacturers.

The forms in Gonzalo Lebrija’s paintings are based  on the folds of a paper airplane. The artist applies thin layers of oil paint and each triangular layer builds up the surface into geometric abstractions that he calls Veladuras (Veils).

British artist Julian Opie works across media and is known for his black line portraits rendered in paired down detail. Stone Heads consists of 4 slabs made of limestone inlaid with patinated bronze and 4 slabs made of slate inlaid with anodised aluminum. 

In a labor-intensive process, the artist Zipora Fried works in pencil over a period of months by building up layers of line and color into large scale works that radiate intensity.

Conceptual photographer James Welling explores the  themes of abstraction, materiality, and spatiality in  this photograph that was part of his New Abstractions series from 1998-2000. These tonally inverted photo-grams are created without a camera.
